What is root canal treatment?
A root canal treatment is a dental procedure needed when blood or nerve supply of the tooth becomes infected. Sometimes, it is possible to not feel any pain in the early stages of infection. If the nerve of your tooth has died (or is dying) it is possible for your tooth to darken in colour. In such case, root canal treatment may also be required.
What are the reasons for needing root canal treatment?
You may have experienced aching, severe pain, tenderness to hot or cold when eating. An infected tooth can also cause swelling of the face and cause discoloration in the tooth. It is also possible to not have any symptoms, and for the infected tooth to be diagnosed on the x-ray. An infected tooth needs treatment as it will worsen if left by itself. It is a source of infection and can affect your immune system.
What is the procedure for root canal treatment?
Root canal usually requires two appointments. At the first appointment, the infected tooth is examined. The root canal is cleaned, shaped and a temporary filling is place. At the second appointment, the temporary filling is removed and we check the infection has cleated before filling the tooth. A crown may be the very last step in the procedure which gives the tooth added strength and protection.
